Small Flies in Woodinville, WA

Located in Woodinville, WA. Hundreds of these small flies have been coming into our house every day through skylight and window drainage holes. When I go up on the roof, it is swarming with them. They die inside the skylight drainage channels and on the skylight blinds and then produce a terrible, overwhelming smell that reminds me of a wet dog. What are they? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Hey Ryan,

I’m sure that it can be frustrating to have flies coming from seemingly nowhere! This looks like a fungus gnat, most likely in the genus Mycetophila. They live in rotting organic matter and soil, so you might want to clean out your gutters if they are swarming around the roof.

Good luck!
