Leaf-Like Moth?
I found this creature on a piling of my beach house on the Jersey Shore in September on a warm day. I didn’t disturb it at all, just took a photo. I only see 4 legs so I’m not even sure it’s a bug. It appears to have an eye and teeth but they are just markings. Cool, huh? Can you identify?

Question Mark Butterfly

Hi Paul,
This is actually a Question Mark Butterfly, Polygonia interrogationis.  The Question Mark is one of the Anglewing Butterflies, a genus of Nymphalida, the Brush Footed Butterfly Family.  This family is known as Brushfooted Butterflies because the first pair of legs is modified into brushlike appendages not used for walking, so only four legs are visible.  Your letter mentions this observation, and photo illustrate it. Your photo also nicely illustrates the silver Question Mark on the underside of the lower wings.

Question Mark Caterpillar
Here is a caterpillar I saw while backpacking in South Carolina. I think it is a question mark (?). Didn’t see any on your site, does this seem like the right ID?

Hi Robert,
This is probably a Question Mark Caterpillar, Polygonia interrogationis, but it could be a closely related species like the Comma. At any rate, the posture indicates it is getting ready to form a chrysalis. For the record, there are other Question Mark caterpillars on our five caterpillar pages.

My 4 year old son found this caterpiller in our backyard along with many monarch caterpillers. We live in northern Oklahoma and there are a lot of critters around here & I had just never seen something like this before. I was hoping you’d be able to tell me what kind of caterpiller it is so we can put it in our nature book we started. It’s a great way to get out of the house on a nice day and to teach your children about outside & nature. So please let us know what kind of caterpiller this is. He’s a strange one.

Hi Heather,
We believe your caterpillar is a Question Mark Butterfly, Polygonia interrogationis.  This is a highly variable caterpillar species, but there is an image on BugGuide that is very close in coloration, though your specimen is much brighter.  Question Mark Caterpillars feed on Nettle, false nettle, elms, hackberry, Japanese hops, and it would be very helpful to know what the food plant was for your specimen.

Is this a Gray Comma (Polygonia progne)?
I have attached a couple of pictures of this butterfly my husband found in our garden.

Letter 5 – Questionmark

Hi – GREAT website – I’ve used it many times in identifying all the little guys I come across inmy yard. Please help me identify this butterfly (from southern NY) Thanks!

Hi Denise,
This is one of the Anglewing Butterflies that are named after punctuation marks. We believe it is a Questionmark. It earned its common name due to the silver mark on the underside of the hind wing which resembles the punctuation mark denoting interogation.
