Parasitic wasp

Hallo,

We have this beautiful creature on our dining room wall. It is 4cm long altogether, 2cm antennae and 2cm body.  The wings protrude beyond the body.

This is in North Norfolk UK. February 6th 2024. Rural village, outside temperature 10°C, humidity 90%

I am sorry the picture quality is poor. Family would do if you can’t get species.

Many thanks

Stephen

Dear Stephen,

We are never going to be able to provide you with an exact species identification, but we can tell you that this is a parasitic wasp in the family Ichneumonidae, and it is one of if not the the largest animal family, with anestimated 60,000 species worldwide(2) (maybe up to 100,000, according to some estimates). Ichneumon Wasps are very important in our ecosystem, because many of these species help control other insect pest populations.
