Hi Donna,
Annual Cicadas in the genus Tibicen like your individual are often mistaken for large flies. Annual Cicadas are sometimes called Dog Day Harvestflies. They make a loud sound like a buzz saw that can be heard in the trees in mid to late summer.
I am from the manitoulin and we have had cicada,s for year,s. They were kind of an alarm clock for the summer is coming to a close. This was by the buzzing noise they mad on a hot day.
