This bug kept flying into out cabin this evening in Manosque in Provence. Pound coin for scale. We’ve gently released it a few times but it keeps returning. Attracted by light. Children love it.

Dear D. Mullen,
Your beetle is
Polyphylla fullo, commonly called a Pine Chafer.  According to NatureSpot, it is found:  “In and around pine woods especially on sandy soil but usually only encountered as a vagrant in Britain.”  This is one of the beetle species that is known for producing very audible sounds by rubbing body parts together, a process known as stridulation.
