Hi Mr Bugman. Any idea what this is? We found it in our garden in July, we’ve shown lots of people and no one knows. Please help.

Hover Fly

Hover Fly

Dear Mia,
Your fly looks like the Hover Fly,
Volucella inanis, that is pictured on the Diptera Info site.  Many harmless Hover Flies in the family Syrphidae mimic the markings on stinging Bees and Wasps for protection.

This looks more like a hornet mimic hoverfly (Volucella zonaria). I don’t believe that Volucella inanis has a dark red thorax.

Since we do not have entomology credentials, sometimes we should just be more general in our identifications. Seems at least we have the genus correct.
