I believe you incorrectly spell the name of the Praying Mantis as “Preying” on your website. I have checked various sources and it is spelled with an “a” because the front legs look like they are “praying” not because it is a predator that preys. Thanks for your great website!

Our editorial staff prefers the more secular modifier “Preying” to the homonym “Praying” because while Mantids might appear to pray, they do not, and they most definitely do prey. We understand that the name Praying Mantis is more acceptable, but unlike the rigidity of the scientific binomial naming system, common names have more flexibility, and we firmly believe language should be malleable.
