Male Velvet Ant

Hi David,
This is a male wasp in the genus
Dasymutilla, a group commonly called Velvet Ants because the females are flightless and they resemble large furry ants.  Only the female Velvet Ant stings and the sting is reported to be extremely painful.  Males lack stingers.
