Please help, my husband’s niece house sit for us & the next day after being home we found all these little bugs on top of the bed. We thought they were baby dog ticks round & black grey in color. We vacuumed them up & stripped the bed. The next day we came home to them on the bed again & I went into overdrive cleaning, even encased our bed. I have bites on my, neck, shoulders & around hairline. My husband & daughter have no signs….I. have checked our heads for lice & nothing!! I am losing my mind over this & getting tired of our nightly ritual of bed cleaning. We live in southern Maryland. I am also submitting a pic of a black bug we have seen a lot of, that bug is upside down in the pic….thank you!!

Thing found on the bed

Dear desperately need help,
We cannot make out any details in the thing you found on the bed.  Did they move?  Are you certain they were living things?  We sometimes get reports of Tropical Fowl Mites or Tropical Rat Mites entering homes and biting the occupants, but this generally happens if there was a bird nest on the roof or a rat’s nest the attic, and the occupants “flew the coop”, leaving nothing else for the Mites to feed upon.  Again, we cannot make out any details in your photo to be certain.  Here is a link to Biting Mites in the home from CityBugs website.  The second creature is a Grain Weevil, and it may be infesting stored grain products in the pantry or pet foods including bird seed.  You will need to find the source of the infestation to eliminate that problem.  Just discard the infested food products.  Here is a recent posting on Grain Weevils.

Thank you for responding so quickly! The weivels are an easy fix. The bugs found on bed were alive. At first glance it looked like dirt & then I did think were dead….but they moved very slowly. Sort of just pulling themselves along with their very tiny (many) legs. I took a couple of more pics, hope they help. Also the one in the pic seems to be dried up kind of shriveled…probably from one the many products I used. However my itching has not subsided. Thank you again!

Hi again desperately need help,
We are sorry, but we cannot tell what this is.  It might be a Mite.  Perhaps one of our readers will be able to provide some information.

This insect was on my car. I had never seen a white bug before, so I took a picture.

Little Leaf Notcher Weevil

Dear Marisa,
We are relatively certain this is a native Floridian Weevil known as the Little Leaf Notcher,
Artipus floridanus, which we found on BugGuide, but we would not want to discount the possibility that it might be the introduced and invasive species Myllocerus undecimpustulatus undatus, which you may read about in the Department of Agriculture paper.

Weevil from Costa Rica: Brentus anchorago

I have no idea what this could be
Location: Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

This photo was taken at Bosque del Cabo Rainforest Lodge in Costa Rica, located on the Osa Peninsula by the resident biologist (I believe his name is Philip). He isn’t sure what it is either, so I thought this would be a good place to try to help him find out what it is. My best guess is that it’s a weevil species, but I really have no idea.

Hi Crysta,
You are correct that this is a Weevil, and it presented quite a challenge for us to get a proper identification.  We believe it is a male
Brentus anchorago, and we first identified it on this FlickRiver website after considerable searching.  This entomology website confirmed that identification.  It is also represented on BugGuide with two mounted specimens, a male and a female, and we can deduce that your individual is a male.  Perhaps the nicest images are on FlickRiver.

Hey,
I thought I’d send you a couple of pictures of mating immigrant leaf weevils. I found them walking along my clothesline today. They were super active, it was hard to get a good picture. As you can see, there is some sexual dimorphism, as well as a slight colour difference between the two. In the second picture, the weevils walked onto my camera lens, and though the picture is fuzzy, you can still see how the male grips the female with his feet.

Hi HQ,
We are thrilled to be able to post you images of this invasive exotic species perpetuating in its new land.  The BugGuide information page on the Green Immigrant Leaf Weevil is quite informative.

Granary Weevil

Mystery bug
Location: San Francisco, CA
April 11, 2011 12:31 am
Hello there!
Over the past couple of months, I have been noticing an increasing number of these bugs in my house– primarily in my kitchen and bathroom. I am wondering if it is coming in through my drain? I find about a dozen of them each week now. They are quite small– about double the size of a sesame seed. I am curious whether they are something I should be concerned about having in my home?
Thank you!!

Dear Elaine,
The tines of the fork provide a nice sense of scale for this Granary Weevil in the genus
Sitophilus, or some other closely related Weevil.  Granary Weevils infest stored grain and grain products, including rice, corn, bird seed and pet food.  If you have any bargain bags of grain or pet food stored in your kitchen, or any pantry products that have been stored for more than a year, that would be a great place to begin searching for the source of the infestation.

Ewwww Please Help

Hi, my name’s Elizabeth and I live in Central FL. I recently went out to my garage to do some laundry and I found tons of tiny black bug/beetle looking things! They are crawling all over my detergent bottles, clothing, and floor. I want to know what they are so I can take the proper action to rid them. Also, are they harmful? I have a 3 month old and I don’t want him getting bit! We had rain about a week ago but it has been hot and humid since then. I have included a few pictures but I didn’t want to stick around much longer. They don’t fly or jump when I near them. They are very easy to smash. I do NOT like any type of insect! Please help me!

Granary Weevil

This is some species of Weevil, and our best guess is that it may be a Granary Weevil in the genus Stilophilus (see BugGuide).  Granary Weevils infest stored grain, including rice and corn.  They may also infest pet food made of grain and other products with a grain component.  In addition to the Granary Weevils, there may be similar genera that will infest stored foods.  Check that large bag of pet food or bird seed that might be in your garage for a source of the infestation.  Granary Weevils do not pose a threat to your infant as they will not bite.

Thank you so much. I also noticed small white worm like things in my dog food. You are correct about the grain in the dog food. I keep both my cat food and dog food out there. I will take out the containers and wash them then add some fresh new food. Hopefully that will help! : )

The white worm like things are the immature Weevil larvae.

Oh ok. Well hopefully I can get that area cleaned properly and not have to worry about them. My Husband was making fun of me because I was scared of them lol! I kept feeling bugs crawl on me all night long! Some people fear water or heights…I fear bugs and spiders! I do like this website though. I have learned some intersting things from here. Thanks a bunch!

Weevil from the Virgin Islands

Hector the Bug
Location: St John, US Virgin Islands
March 1, 2011 10:38 pm
Hello Bugman,
We found Hector here in our apartment in the US Virgin Islands in February 2011. He appears to be some sort of beetle, but that’s as far as we got. We couldn’t find any images online that resembled him. He played dead for a little while and then cooperatively posed for some photos before we set him free. Do you know what he is?

Weevil

Dear Jonathan & Katie,
Hector is a species of Weevil, a very large group of Beetles.  We had no luck web searching Weevils and Virgin Islands, so we tried nearby Puerto Rico where we happened upon Alfredo Colón’s Wildlife website with 154 images of Weevils, including the first image pictured, a Citrus Root Weevil,
Diaprepes abbreviatus, which is the closest match there.  BugGuide indicates that the species has “color highly variable (morphs from gray to yellow to orange to black)“.  The Texas Department of Agriculture has an online fact sheet that indicates:  “Diaprepes abbreviatus is a root weevil native to the Caribbean where at least 16 additional species within the genus are known. Diaprepes abbreviatus has a wide host range, attacking about 270 different plants including citrus, sugarcane, vegetables, potatoes, woody field-grown ornamentals, sweet potatoes, papaya, guava, mahogany, containerized ornamentals, and non-cultivated wild plants.“  We believe Hector may be a Citrus Root Weevil, or possibly another member of the genus.
