We were exploring a dark cave, in the marble mountains, near Hoi An, Vietnam, in March this year, and came across this spider. It’s hard to tell in the photo we took but it’s leg span was approx 5-6 inches. It had striped markings on it. It was in a pitch black cave, we discovered it trying to find our way using a camera flash! Would be really interested to find out what kind of spider it is!

Dear KH,
We cannot say for certain, but the general shape of this spider as well as the size you indicate leads us to believe this is a Huntsman Spider or Giant Crab Spider in the family Sparassidae.  We will attempt additional research.

Hi Daniel,
Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly. That is really interesting, thank you!
Best wishes,
Kate

Huntsman Spider

Hi Okienap,
This male Huntsman Spider,
Heteropoda venatoria, is most likely originally from Central America, however, its range was greatly expanded to many warm climates with harbors because the Huntsman Spiders were transported with shipments of bananas, earning them the common name Banana Spider.  According to BugGuide:  “Can be swift and sometimes aggressive but not considered dangerously venomous to humans. May bite in self-defense if roughly handled; mildly painful bite (can be likened to a bee sting if spider injects venom).”  These Huntsman Spiders are frequently tolerated because they are nocturnal hunters that help to control cockroach populations.

Hi Donald,
This is a Huntsman Spider or Giant Crab Spider in the family Sparassidae.  Most are harmless, but there are some tropical species that are quite poisonous.  Ryan PHotographic has some images taken in Fiji.

I took this photo Feb 3 2009. This spider is on a 2×4 deck board, so the abdomen seems to be just less than an inch diameter. It was hiding out of sight under a canvas cover, and dropped out when the cover was lifted, so my guess is that it is mostly nocturnal. It sought a hiding place slowly.

Hi my name is Wes and I found this spider walking across the house I was building in the middle of the jungle in Panama. So I took a picture of it and Put it on Facebook. People were saying it was a huge recluse, I think it is a bird spider. Can you tell from these two photos what this might be? I am located in Bocas Del Toro On Isla Colon. This photo was taken February 1st. This house I am building is well in the jungle so it has very little traffic,
