A few times a year, Emerald Moths in the subfamily Geometrinae come to the porch light.  This is the first individual we have noticed this year.

Squash Vine Borer

About a weird red bug on my pumpkin stems
Location: Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
June 26, 2011 1:43 pm
Hello,
this morning I noticed a weird red bug that looked like a cross between a beetle and a wasp that was fully bright red with several black dots down its abdomen. The abdomen curled up just like a bee’s does when it’s pollinating, and its wings were pretty large and totally black. But the front of its body resembles a beetle shape. I am attaching the few pics I was able to take before it flew away. We have a small garden, but everytime it flew away and came back it went right back to the pumpkin stems at the bottom near the dirt and seemed to be stabbing the thickest part of the stem like a bee pollinates flowers.I have never seen anything like this insect before and was wondering if you could help identify it. Was wondering if it was good or bad for the pumpkin plant.
Thank you

Hi Cheri,
This is a Squash Vine Borer in the family Sesiidae, the Clearwing Moths are are wasp mimics.  The behavior you describe is consistent with that of a female ovipositing, or laying eggs.  The larvae bore in the stems of plants in the squash family including pumpkin and melons.

Hey, I found this flying creature at work and was really curious as to what it is. It looks like a lobster crossed with a butterfly.

Hi Joe,
We could have easily given you a general family name of Sesiidae, the Clearwing Wasp Moths, without any research.  These Clearwings are wasp mimics, and the larvae are borers.  There are numerous members in this family, and many are very poorly represented with photographs of living specimens.  Pinned specimens from collections are often quite difficult to compare visually with living moths as the colors seem so much duller in museum specimens.  We scoured the pages of BugGuide, eliminating possibility after possibility, until we stumbled upon the Douglas Fir Pitch Moth,
Synanthedon novaroensis, which is represented on BugGuide by a single mounted specimen from Alaska.  Bold Systems Taxonomy supplied additional images of pinned specimens from museums, and it was not until we searched the Moth Photographers Group website that we found a photo of a living specimen that satisfied us that we had properly identified your moth.  We also located this technical paper on the Douglas Fir Pitch Moth.

This was a bug on a screen at a farm we were at in northern NJ on June 20th. Didn’t realize it was real at first, thought it was a leaf!

Dear Beth,
The olive markings on the Pandora Sphinx or Pandorus Sphinx,
Eumorpha pandorus, really do resemble the markings on camouflage fatigues, and you are not the first person who has noted that.  Nocturnal Sphinx Moths often come to rest during the day near light sources, only to fly away again when night falls again.

Ceanothus Silkmoth

Cecropia Moth

Hi there,
I saw this beautiful moth in Los Gatos, California yesterday. After doing a little bit of research trying to identify the type of moth that I saw, I kept coming across information that the cecropia moth isn’t found in California. I was wondering what you thought of this or if I am correct in identifying this moth.

Dear Gretchen,
Unlike the Cecropia Moth, the closely related Ceanothus Silkmoth,
Hyalophora euryalus, is indigenous to Southern California.

Mating Tiger Moths from the Philippines

Please Identify This

Hello, I have seen this small tiny flying creature in our Backyard and in some of my friends backyards. I want to know if this is a moth or a butterfly and what kind of a specie it is. Took this picture for my 365project (http://www.365project.org/altadc). Thank you so much.

Mating Tiger Moths

Hi Alta,
We originally believed these might be Wasp Moths or Clearwings in the family Sesiidae.  The mating pair demonstrates dramatic sexual dimorphism.  We tried searching the family and Philippines, and immediately found a match on TrekNature that agrees with our family identification, and a comment provides this species name:
Amata heubneri, and indicates it is a Tiger Moth in the subfamily Arctiinae.  Then things get really confusing.  The Butterfly House website has images of a mating pair of Amata heubneri that do not exhibit the sexual dimorphism.  We are relatively confident that these are diurnal Tiger Moths in the subfamily Arctiinae, but we may need additional time on the species ID.

Diurnal Tiger Moth

Julian Donahue, noted Arctiid Expert, provides some information
Beautiful and fascinating photo. Using the “old” classification, this is in the tiger-moth family Arctiidae, subfamily Ctenuchinae, and a member of the Old World group of genera. It is NOT Amata huebneri, but rather the male appears to be Ceryx flaviplagia, described from Mindanao by Hampson in 1898, or something very close to it. The female, however, may represent sexual dimorphism (common in this group) or an extreme melanic individual (also fairly common). It is very likely that the female was described as a distinct, separate, species, because it is so different from the male (also a very common occurrence, a confusion usually not resolved until mating observations such as this one provide evidence that two “species” are actually the same species, or “conspecific.” In fact, the female looks very similar to illustrations I have seen of a moth, described from the female only, as Ceryx chea Druce; the fact that it was also described from Mindanao makes the possibility of conspecificity even more likely.
Be aware, however, that I am working from very old references, and I am not conversant with the latest knowledge about Old World ctenuchines, so further verification and research are necessary to confirm the identification and, more importantly, whether the possibility of conspecificity of these two “species” has been previously reported. This is really exciting stuff that should be pursued further.

Clymene Moth

Moth, butterfly, or something else?
Location: Raleigh, NC

Saw this outside tonight on the bushes. I initially thought it was a moth, but didn’t see the feathery antenna that I though moths have. Can you help identify it?
Thanks!

Hi Mike,
Not all moths have feathery antennae, but you can be assured that no butterflies have feathery antennae.  This is a Clymene Moth,
Haploa clymene, and it is classified as one of the Tiger Moths.
