Found this magnificent (and large) beetle in the lawn in Central Oregon. Found Sep. 2011 at 4400’ during a typical 80o fall day. It was the only one like it that we’ve seen here. My searches on other beetle sites didn’t uncover anything close,

Hello Mr. Bugman, I have searched the Internet trying to identify this crazy little bug. It was found under the covers of a bed that’s not used very often. It has little hairs all over its carrot shaped body and long grey hairs that protrude from it’s hind section. Turned over, it looks like six legs near the widest part, or head section. I could only see these features with a jeweler’s loop. I would say the bug measures 3/64” wide x 1/4” long half body half tail. Thanks for the help

Carpet Beetle Larva
Dear Bugman,
Just yesterday we posted another image of a Carpet Beetle Larva. We believe your Carpet Beetle Larva is the larva of a Black Carpet Beetle in the genus Attagenus based on this image posted to BugGuide.

Hi bugman,
Found several of these bugs alive, indoors, in Eastern Pennsylvania, today (middle of September). Sorry, I didn’t think to include something for scale. The thing is quite small– 1/4” to 1/2” range.
TIA!

Carpet Beetle Larva
Hi John,
You have Carpet Beetle Larvae, common household pests with a cosmopolitan distribution. Here is a very similar looking Carpet Beetle from Iran. Try vacuuming more often and remove all pet hair.

Predaceous Diving Beetle
Dear Puzzled on the Praires,
This beautiful beetle is a Predaceous Diving Beetle in the family Dytiscidae, but we are not certain of the species as many member is the family look similar, as you can see if you browse through the images on BugGuide.
Thank you very much for identifying this beetle.
This year we have a large slough on the south side of our acreage, the Diving beetle probably came from there. I put it in my garden, guess I should have put it in the water. I was surprised when I found it in my truck, it must have flew in there.
Again thank you, your bug web site is wonderful, we have lots, I mean hundreds, of dragonflies in the garden and I have looked up several of them on your site.
Keep up the good work. Cheers

I have a friend visiting the jungle area of Indonesia. He took this picture of an insect – I consider it to be a beautiful yet odd looking but in an awesome way type of insect. Can you help identify it? He almost looks like he could be clay-mation.

Colorful Weevil from Indonesia
Dear JJ,
While we haven’t the time to research what we believe will not be too difficult of a species identification, we are immediately posting your photo of this magnificent, colorful, Indonesian Weevil. Just prior to hitting post, we decided to see if we could identify this beauty, and we quickly found the appropriately named Eupholus magnificus on InsectaCulture.com.

Hello there, I’m so glad I found this site – can you tell me what this beetle is? It’s about an inch long and I’ve only seen these in plain black and this one with spots is unusual. Thank you!

Weevil
Dear jessimcph,
Your photo is somewhat blurry and lacking good resolution, so it is difficult to be certain, but your Weevil bears a physical similarity to this lovely spotted Weevil from the Philippines identified as Pachyrrhynchus sp. on the Science Photo Library website.

I saw these bugs eating an alder bush in my yard up here in Anchorage Alaska. I am wondering what they are and if I need to do anything about them. They are all over the alder bush.
We noticed that when they are touched the white spots on them pop out. I can’t find anything about them online.

Leaf Beetle Larvae
Hi Erica,
These are Leaf Beetle Larvae, and we believe we found a good match on BugGuide that is identified as Chrysomela aeneicollis, and the photo is from Alaska. We would also admit that we are not certain of the species, since larvae are often difficult to identify with certainty, but we are relatively confident that we have the genus Chrysomela correct. Here is another similar looking unidentified larva from the genus Chrysomela, also from BugGuide. If you read the comments on this posting on BugGuide, you will see that the larvae are capable of emitting drops of odorous liquid from the white tubercles, which supports what you have written. Our one reservation is that from what we have read, beetles in the genus Chrysomela feed upon willow and poplar, and we haven’t found any indication that they feed upon Alder.
