Dear anyway,
Your photo is quite blurry, which would have probably made any conclusive identification impossible, but luckily, we received another letter from the Philippines today with correctly focused images of what we believe to be a Prionid Root Borer
Ziglipton sanchezi, probably the same beetle you submitted.

We found this bug in our home recently. It was really big. Looking through the internet, I thinks it’s some sort of longhorn beetle. What do you guys think?

Prionid Root Borer

Hi Ross,
That is some impressive beetle.  We believe we have correctly identified your Longhorned Borer Beetle in the subfamily Prioninae, the Root Borers, as
Ziglipton sanchezi by comparing your images to mounted images on the Salagubang Philippine Beetles website.  Sadly, we are unable to locate any photos online of living specimens.  Interestingly, we did receive another letter today with some blurry images of what appears to be the same beetle, and we will post that letter as well.

Correction: Anomophysis aegrota perhaps
We just received a comment that this may be Anomophysis aegrota, and we believe looks to be a closer match.  It can also be found on Salagubang Philippine Beetles website.

Found this on the back porch behind a broom…dead.
Looks as though it might be a flying beetle.
Interesting pattern on it.

Dear Bugz E,
The corpse you found is that of a Cottonwood Borer,
Plectrodera scalator, according to BugGuide. It is in our opinion the most distinctive beetle found in North America north of the Mexican border.

Sawyer

Monochamus carolinensis?
Location:  Madera County, California
September 24, 2010 11:26 pm
This awesome beetle flew into my chest today (9/24/2010), bounced off and into my camera bag. Luckily, I already had the camera out. I believe this to be Monochamus carolinensis but I am unable so far to determine the range of this beetle in any of the books we have nor on the internet.
Note: The beetle was encouraged to climb onto a feather I found nearby when it came time to close up the camera bag sans beetle.
We live in Raymond, California (Madera County) at around 1100 feet elevation. The terrain is oak savanna, with a good population of gray pine.

Sawyer

Hi Megan,
While we believe you are correct that this is a Sawyer in the genus
Monochamus, we do not believe it to be Monochamus carolinensis.  Rather, we believe it may be Monochamus obtusus, a species represented on BugGuide from a single sighting in Oregon.

Thank you so much for the reply!  The link you provided does look a lot more like the individual I saw.  I sure appreciate your help and great web site.

Hi Daniel, A co-worker sent me this picture today. I guess I’m getting the reputation of the bug guys here. Anyway, I believe it might be in the Prioninae sub-family. As always, I appreciate you help and for kindling my interest in insects. P.S. I’m really looking forward to your new book. Congrats

HI Brad,
We agree that this may be a Prionid.  We are going to post your letter and photo before doing any research as we just got home from work and after feeding the chickens, we need to eat.  Hopefully, we will be able to identify it shortly, or perhaps one of our readers will provide an identification.  The metallic olive color of this beetle is truly lovely.

Update:  Possible Identification
September 22, 2010 5:11 AM
After a good night’s sleep, we decided to tackle this identification by searching the Worldwide Cerambycoidea Photo Gallery for Honduran species, and we believe this may be
Strongylaspis corticaria, which is in the subfamily Prioninae.  We also located an image on BioLib, but we have not been successful in locating an image of a living specimen.

Banded Alder Borer

What kind of beetle is this?
Location:  Western Washington State

I found this bug crawling on my kids trampoline. I do have a cedar tree by the trampoline. I believe it is a beetle but would like to know what kind and if it is trouble for my plants.

Hi Tawny,
For some reason, many of the images we receive of the Banded Alder Borer,
Rosalia funebris, are of very poor quality, either being blurry or of low resolution, so it is refreshing to have received your marvelous photograph of this stunning insect.

Hi Leah,
In its coloration, markings and behavior, the harmless Red Headed Ash Borer mimics certain wasps to help protect it from predators.

Ornate Checkered Beetle and Mating Flower Longhorns

2 beetles seen in Montana

Greetings Bugman!
You have a wonderful site! My grandson and I found it a year or so ago.
I am trying to identify 2 kinds of beetles (there is a 3rd in the photo, but tiny)that I photographed on some white spirea at Glacier NP last month.
Can you help me identify them? I searched the site, but probably not the right search word combos.
You may use the photos with attribution if you like.

Ornate Checkered Beetle and Mating Flower Longhorns

Hi Gretchen,
Thanks for the complimentary letter.  We believe the black and yellow beetle is an Ornate Checkered Beetle,
Trichodes ornatus, based on BugGuide images, but since its head is buried in the inflorescence, positive identification may not be possible.  The mating pair appear to be some species of Flower Longhorn in the subfamily Lepturinae, possibly Xestoleptura crassipes, also pictured on BugGuide.

Many thanks, Daniel! I just have that ‘need to know’ gene and when I post photos on my blog I like to have an identification.
And, thanks for the link to BugGuide! I will add that to my links list.
Gretchen Flickinger
