Dear bugman,
My boyfriend and I encountered this strange creature while walking around downtown at night. It was lingering on a lit sign outside of one of the local shops. It was nearly as big as my hand. I’ve never seen anything like it before. Help?

Female Dobsonfly

Hi Mishi,
This is a female Dobsonfly and you can see the posting we just made of a male Dobsonfly.  They are easily distinguished from one another by the size and shape of the mandibles.  Dobsonflies comprise one of our top 10 insect identification requests because of their large size and unusual appearance.  Dobsonflies are harmless, though a female might nip if she is carelessly handled.
