Dear Cr,
What you saw was more likely the closely realated Modest Sphinx, Pachysphinx modesta, which may be viewed on BugGuide. The Western Poplar Sphinx, Pachysphinx occidentalis,is not found east of the Mississippi River.

I live in long Island, New York. Today my son yells "mom come and see this." On the front door screen was a huge bug, light brown, with dark eyes, the wings look like it was wearing a cape. Before i could get my phone or camera my son tapped the screen and the bug flew away. I never saw an insect like this therefore I went online to look at photographs of insects, from the photos on this site we concluded that this huge bug was a WESTERN POPLAR SPHINX, and we saw it in New York. Awesome!
